Built in 1939 by Sturgeon Bay Boat Works for William Sellman Fisheries of Manistique, Michigan, the Evelyn S. is a 50-foot wooden gill-net fish tug powered by a 3-cylinder Kahlenburg diesel engine and sheathed in steel to withstand frozen Lake Michigan waters. After decades of service in commercial fishing and towing, she found her permanent home in South Haven as part of the Michigan Maritime Museum’s on-water fleet, where she continues to educate and inspire visitors as part of the Great Lakes Fisheries Heritage Trail.
